ROCKY MOUNT – Mildred Mozingo “Granny B” Barwick, age 99 was promoted to Glory to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 15, 2022. Born in Wayne County, NC on June 26, 1923. She is preceded in her death by her parents, Ed Patrick Mozingo and Addie Leona Crawford Mozingo; her husband, Edward Howard Barwick, Sr.; her son, Edward H. Barwick, Jr.; her sisters, Laura Mozingo Dorazo Lutz, Dollie Mozingo Allen, Alice Mozingo Creech, Emma Mozingo Talton, Eunice Mozingo Hines, Pollie Mozingo Suiter and Marie Mozingo Kennedy; her brothers, Wyatt Mozingo, Troy Mozingo and Donald Mozingo.

She had resided with her daughter, Jeanie Whitehead and her husband, William Jim Whitehead for the past three years. Mildred worked for Parkview Hospital for many years before going to work as the social worker and church secretary of The Salvation Army in Rocky Mount for over 30 years. When she retired, she began her ministry of visitation in the nursing homes of Nash County. Granny B was devoted to all nursing home residents in Nash County. She served as a volunteer ombudsman on the Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee at the Upper Coastal Plain Council of Governments for over 25 years. She touched many and the bonds she formed reached far past the realms of advocacy as she transcended into a friend for some and family to others. She became a volunteer with Upper Coastal Plain Council of Governments. She was awarded the Jefferson Award for her community service.

Granny B loved people. She enjoyed making friends everywhere she went. At the age of forty, she was joking with some of the youth at her church that she was old enough to be their Granny. The name stuck and she is well known by young and old as Granny B. On February 13, 1992, she and her husband celebrated 50 years of marriage with a beautiful reception with many friends and family. It was a joyous occasion as they renewed their wedding vows.

She was a member of the Salvation Army for over 70 years, enjoying teaching Bible Study and women’s ministry. She was always active whether ringing the bell for the Red Kettle Campaign at Christmas or registering those who needed assistance in various ways. She loved being with the Senior Group and the Exercise Groups that met at different times.

Granny B had a magnetic personality and a tremendous compassion and love for children, especially those with a disability or challenge. For years she has kept her list with birthdays, and she would send cards on their birthday, usually with a note. She was a caregiver, and she has sent to one particular nursing home a card to each resident and staff member a birthday card on their birthday.

Granny B is survived by with great love and cherishing memories; her daughter, Jeanie Whitehead and husband, Paster Jim of Scotland Neck; her son, Larry C.
