ROCKY MOUNT – Jo Dan McGee Bailey, age 100, passed away on Thursday, May 30, 2024. Born in Laurel County, KY on July 23, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Daniel C. McGee and Maggie Epling McGee. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Milton Cecil “Mickey” Bailey; her grandson, Brian Riggan; her sister, Blanche McGee Hope; and her brother, Burton E. McGee.

A woman of dedicated service to her country and her community, Jo worked for Wright and Patterson Fields located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH, writing shorthand for Air Force Officers during WWII. Following the war, she married the love of her life and together relocated to Rocky Mount where she dedicated herself to her husband and children. While in her forties, Jo discovered another calling and decided to return to school to earn her nursing degree. Following this achievement, Jo went to work at Nash General Hospital as a registered nurse specializing as a cardiac care nurse. She would always remark on how being a nurse was such a joy and how she would gladly do it without pay. A woman of great faith, Jo was in her earlier years an active member of Edgemont Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School. She later became a member of First United Methodist Church and was a trained Stephen Minister. She was a leader in the Bible Study Fellowship, and she also enjoyed being a part of the Edgemont Garden Club. A loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and dear friend to many, Jo will be forever loved and never forgotten.

Jo is survived by her her daughter, Bonnie Blue Bailey; her two sons, Mickey Bailey and wife, Jackie, and Dan McGee Bailey and wife, Diane; her grandchildren, Kemp Riggan and Dan Bailey, II; her great grandchildren, Bailey Riggan and Gracie Riggan; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

A Private Family Graveside Service to celebrate Jo’s life will be held at Rocky Mount Memorial Park.
