William Atrel Cooper, Sr

William Atrel Cooper, Sr., passed away Monday, February 13, 2017. He was born January 29, 1937 in Greenville, SC to the late Atrel and Inez Cooper. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Judith A. Cooper whom he married on September 30, 1995; two step-sons, Jay and Ron Hill; two sisters, Lottie Eskridge and Margaret Harrington.
He is survived by, step-daughter, Stephanie Davis; two step-sons, Larry Hill (WendySue) and Troy Hill; fourteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Jean Butler and a special niece, Betty Sander (Jeff).
Mr. Cooper was employed by Neals Service Station in Greenville, S.C. until 1956 when he moved to Rocky Mount. He was a supervisor at Schottland Mills from 1956 until 1971. From 1971 to 1980 he worked as a maintenance service man for Zip Mart. He was a manager at Wells General Merchandise from 1980 until 1987. In 1987 he worked as a Department Manager at K-Mart until his retirement in 1999. He returned to K-Mart, part time in 2005. He also served as Assisstant Chief for Red Oak Fire Department and was a First Aid Instructor for the Red Cross in the 1980’s.
He was a loving husband, step-father and grandfather. He enjoyed family gatherings and spending time with his grandchildren who referred to him as “Pa”. He loved the outdoors and fishing. He was most content out on the water in his boat. He enjoyed spending time at his camp at Lake Royale and tending to his garden.
Although he is gone, our memories of him will never be forgotten.
Entombment will be held Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Rocky Mount Memorial Park Mausoleum.
