Thomas Hobson Groome, Jr

Thomas “Tom” Hobson Groome, Jr. age 92, passed away on Monday, April 12, 2021. Born in Nash County, NC on August 6, 1928, he was the son of the late Thomas Hobson Groome, Sr. and Gertrude Alberta Rowe Groome. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Doris Groome Washburn.

Tom was a lifelong resident of Rocky Mount. He served in the US Army as a Sargent in Germany. Tom retired from Firestone in Rocky Mount as a store manager. He was a dedicated member of Arlington Baptist Church with 87 years of perfect attendance. Tom was a 32nd Degree Mason, member of the Corinthians 230 Lodge, and a Shriner. He was an avid golfer and joined Birchwood Country Club in 1965 and kept his membership until they closed. Tom was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother and will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Tom is survived by his wife of 68 years, Barbara Taylor Groome; his son, Thomas Hobson Groome, III (Lisa) of Florence, SC; his daughter, Vickie Lynn Groome of Rocky Mount; his grandchildren, Thomas Joshua Groome and Stella Kathleen Groome; and his nephews, Craig Washburn (Pat) and Kent Washburn (Lyla).

A Special Gathering of Family and Friends will be held on Friday, April 16, 2021 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Military Honors will be rendered at 3:00 PM.

Burial of Cremains will take place at Rocky Mount Memorial Park.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the family is requesting the need for social distancing and wearing of masks due to health concerns faced around our nation at this time.
