Robert Christy “R.C.” Holland passed away May 18, 2006, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, surrounded by his loving family. He was a native of Gaston County and son of the late Adolphus and Margaret Ann Froneberger Holland. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred Russell Holland, son Robert Michael Holland, six sisters and two brothers. R.C. served his country as an Army medic in England during World War II. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years and was the owner of Pitt Mechanical Contractors Inc. of Greenville. He enjoyed spending time outside, hunting and fishing, and especially enjoyed working in his garden. His love of gardening will be carried on by his children. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Loretta Wortman Holland; daughters and sons-in-law, Marcia H. and Dob Phillips of Gastonia, Theresa H. and Glenn Turner of Rocky Mount and Pamela H. and David Cherry of Grifton; son and daughter-in-law, Mark C. and Beth Holland of Raleigh; grandchildren, Jill Phillips, Travis Adams, Jason Turner, Keith Casper, Tyler Holland, Harrison Holland and Elliott Cherry; and brother, Ernest F. Holland of Gastonia. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, May 21, 2006, at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. David Eidson and the Rev. Gerald Riggs officiating. Burial will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2006. The family wishes to thank the UNC Cardiothoracic and Progressive Care Units for the devoted care given to R.C. and for the constant support they gave to the family during his illness. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials in memory of Robert Christy Holland may be made to the UNC Medicine Service Trust Fund, UNC Hospital MPCU and 6th Floor, 101 Manning Drive, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.
