Pauline Davis Hooks, age 98, passed away Saturday evening, February 5, 2022 at the Hoke Family Pavilion in Durham.

She was born in Nash County on October 21, 1923 to Willie T. and Sally A. Strickland Davis. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Fred, Floyd, Marvin, Luther Carr, and Bob Davis; and sisters, Lucille Howell, Emma Lee Harper, Pearl Carey, and Irene Thurmond.

In her early 20s, Pauline became a Registered Nurse and made Durham her new home. She was a noted skilled professional who dedicated forty-two years of service at Duke Hospital. She loved being a nurse and caring for others. Outside of her medical career, her creative outlets included music, art, and dancing. She was a gifted musician who learned to play the piano by ear, as well as a talented artist. She especially enjoyed ballroom dancing and was a long-time student of the Fred Astaire Dance Studio.

Pauline lived a long, fulfilling life and will be greatly missed by her niece, Nan Upchurch of Rocky Mount; devoted friend, Mary Suttle; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, family friends, and other extended relatives.

A special word of gratitude is extended to Chenita McDowell, a beloved friend, caregiver, and special angel on earth.

A Celebration of Pauline’s Life will take place at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, February 9 at the Hillside Mausoleum, Rocky Mount Memorial Park, 4454 Dortches Blvd., Rocky Mount, NC. The family will receive friends prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the charity of your choice.
