Nettie Mae Spain Obituary

ROCKY MOUNT – Nettie Mae Spain, age 101, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. Born in Nash County, NC on April 7, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Douglas Lamm and Sally Matthews Lamm. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lantis Spain; daughter, Betty Jordan; sisters, Gertrude Skinner, Christine Lucas; and brother, Elmo Lamm.

Nettie was a Momeyer native, relocated to Rocky Mount following her marriage to Lantis, and together they were blessed with three children. After Lantis’s passing in 1971, Nettie embarked on a new chapter, dedicating herself to brightening the days of many as a lunchroom attendant at Rocky Mount Senior High for about 10 years. Her commitment to the Calvary Baptist Church community was unwavering, actively engaging in supporting the G.A.’s and rarely missing a Sunday School class or worship. Yet, it was in the kitchen that she truly shone, becoming renowned for her culinary talents, particularly her delectable fried chicken, biscuits, and chocolate cake. Nettie’s legacy transcends the kitchen, leaving behind a treasured memory of warmth, kindness, and genuine love, especially for her family. Her resilience was evident as she navigated life without complaint, embodying a spirit of enduring strength and grace. She will be missed by all that knew her.

Nettie is survived by her son, Ronald Spain (Brenda) of Battleboro; daughter Debbie Sullivan (Marshall) of Spring Hope; son-in-law Norman Jordan of Rocky Mount; grandchildren, Wayne Sullivan (Crystal), Christy Spain, Robbie Spain (Lynn), Matthew Sullivan, Norma Irwin (Michael), Joe Jordan (Vonne); six great grandchildren; sister, Helon Pitts.
