Minnie June Quick Herbert

Ms. Minnie Herbert passed into the kingdom of heaven for eternal rest and peace with her heavenly Father and Lord and Savior Christ Jesus on May 30th, 2021.

Ms. Minnie was born to the late John Wilson Quick and Ethel White Quick on January 16th, 1932 in Bridgeton, NC. Preceding her in death was her only sibling, Betty White Quick; husband, James (Jimmy) Louis Herbert from Enfield; son, James (Jay) Louis Herbert Jr. from Salem Community; and her rescued cat companion, Queenie (a.k.a. “baby girl”).

Although mainly growing up and residing in Rocky Mount in her early teen years, she loved to tell the story about the times she sang on the radio in SC. She loved music, dancing, and had a beautiful singing voice. As a teen in Rocky Mount, she was proud to have worked at Mae and Gorham Pharmacy as a “soda jerk” and Kyser’s Pharmacy. She was proud to be a graduate of Rocky Mount Senior Highschool (a.k.a. Blackbird). As a young adult, she enjoyed working as a bank teller in Rocky Mount until she married and moved, and even then continued her work as a teller at People’s Bank in Enfield, NC. Other jobs she had in Enfield were bookkeeper, hardware store clerk, and receptionist, all the while raising two children and being a dutiful farmer’s wife, as exemplified by her exceptional gardening, preserving, canning, baking, and food preparation skills. Later in life, after moving to Red Oak, and then to Rocky Mount’s Mayfair Apartments community, her baking skills continued to be a blessing to her neighbors/friends, especially her yeast rolls, turnovers, fig bars, etc.. At Mayfair Apartments, she was the self-appointed hospitality/welcome lady, often greeting both new and old residents with a loaf of freshly baked Amish Friendship Bread. Her last employment was with Boddie-Noel Enterprises.

Most importantly, she has always loved her Heavenly Father and her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, both for whom she has been a constant witness and showing the power of Holy Spirit in her life to her children and grandchildren, neighbors, friends, strangers, etc. Before becoming disabled by Alzheimer’s dementia and having to reside in two different assisted living facilities, she faithfully attended Northside Community Church of Rocky Mount. She also demonstrated her faith by leading Bible studies at her apartment complex and supporting whole heartedly her grandchildren’s music ministry, Ekklesia.

She leaves to cherish her memory: daughter, Gail, and son-in-law, Miller Saunders of Red Oak; grandchildren Katelyn and Grant Saunders of Red Oak; daughter-in-law, Whitney Herbert of Salem Community; beloved close cousins, Hester Williams of Southport, NC and her family, and Billy White of Poquoson, VA and his siblings; along with many other beloved cousins from North Carolina and Virginia.

A special thanks and gratitude to the UNC Rex Hospital staff, especially the Palliative Care team, Comfort Care nurses, and Heartland Hospice team for their compassionate care of Ms. Minnie in her last days. Also, special thoughts of appreciation go out to her loving and sharing neighbors and friends at Mayfair Apartments.

A celebration of life service will be held on Friday, June 4th, at 2 pm at Northside Community Church, Rocky Mount, NC, officiated by the Reverend Mark Pridgen. Burial will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. Friends are invited to visit with the family prior to the service beginning at 12:30 pm. Facial coverings are respectfully requested to be worn indoors.
