Mrs. Mattie Hines Barnes, lovingly known to family and friends as “Beanie,” peacefully passed away at the age of 84 on November 24, 2025, at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount, NC, surrounded by loved ones. She was born July 6, 1941, in Wilson County, NC, to the late John and Maomi Hines.

Mattie was united in marriage to the late Cleveland C. Barnes, with whom she shared 55 years of partnership, laughter, and love. Cleveland preceded her in death.

Beanie leaves to cherish her memory six adult children: Michael Barnes, Angela Hunt (John), Belinda Barnes, Michelle Barnes, Sophia Barnes, and Cynthia Boxberger (Kevin); twelve grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She is also survived by six loving siblings: Mae Freeman (Matt), Louise Carter, Mitchell Hines (Gwen), Marshall Hines, Marvin Hines (Deborah Anne), and Laverne Horne. She was preceded in death by three siblings: Milton Hines, Mildred Hines, and Margie Barnes.

Beanie grew up in the Elm City/Sharpsburg area of North Carolina and attended Frederick Douglass High School. After graduating, she worked as a teacher’s aide at Bullock Elementary School. Ultimately, she built a long career and retired from Abbott Laboratories after serving more than 30 years.

Beanie was a devoted member of Cherry Chapel Baptist Church and sang in the choir for many years. She lifted her voice not just in song but in encouragement and joy. She was known for her kindness, strength, and generosity.

A Visitation for Mrs. Barnes will be held from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon on Saturday, December, 6, 2025, at Cherry’s Chapel Baptist Church, 102 US Hwy. 301 S. Elm City, North Carolina. Funeral Services will follow the visitation beginning at 12:00 noon. Interment will immediately follow the service in the Rocky Mount Memorial Park in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
