ROCKY MOUNT – Mary E. Batchelor, age 84, passed away on Thursday, September 4, 2025.  Born in Nash County, NC on January 23, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Garland Batchelor and Elizabeth McNeil Batchelor.  She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Theresa Batchelor; her grandson, Darryl Batchelor; her sisters, Annie Russ, Juanita Batchelor, Alice Batchelor, Beatrice Harris, and Lillian Batchelor; her sister-in-law, Mima Batchelor; and brother-in-law, Ron Sessoms.

Mary will be fondly remembered as a woman who knew how to enjoy life’s simple pleasures and spread joy to those around her. She had a spirit that was full of fun, laughter, and a touch of adventure.

Mary loved the excitement of a good game, whether it was a bus ride to Las Vegas, Atlantic City, or Mississippi, or the anticipation of a fresh scratch-off ticket. When she wasn’t traveling, she found just as much enjoyment at home, watching her favorite daytime game shows and cheering along as if she were part of the audience.

Family and friends will especially remember Mary’s talents in the kitchen. She was well known for her delicious, scrambled eggs, her crispy fried chicken, and her creamy, comforting macaroni and cheese. And no day was complete without her favorite sweet indulgence—Haagen-Dazs butter pecan ice cream.

Mary’s love for life took her many places, but it was her warmth, humor, and ability to make others feel welcome that truly made her unforgettable. Whether on a bus trip with friends, gathered around the table sharing a meal, or simply enjoying an afternoon show, she made moments brighter and memories last.

She leaves behind loved ones who will forever cherish her laughter, her cooking, and the joy she brought into their lives. Mary’s legacy is one of love, good food, good times, and an appreciation for the fun in every day.

Mary is survived by her son, Clarence Batchelor, and wife Celena; her grandchildren, Sha-Mecca Batchelor (Edward), Yishana Bell (Leon), Stefan Batchelor, Mya Batchelor, Markell Batchelor, Clarence Batchelor, Jr., Jamarius Batchelor, Ravell Batchelor (Morgan), Rashad Richardson (Lakinta), and Drew Thornton; her great-grandchildren, Kayla Scott, Carter Gordon, Zoey Gordon, Jakai Batchelor, Ja’ir Richardson, Ju’ri Richardson, Rome Batchelor, and Yaya Thornton; her sisters, Bettie Sessoms, and Maxine Batchelor; her brothers, Garland Batchelor, and Harold Batchelor; her brothers-in-law, David Russ, and Iley Harris; a great host of nieces, nephews and cousins; and her best friends, Gloria Morrison and Yolanda Rowe.
