NASHVILLE – It is with great sadness that the family of Mary Christine Odom announce her passing on Friday, September 6, 2024, at the age of 98. She was born in Edgecombe County to Willard and Nellie Odom on April 20, 1926. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant brother, Bobby, two great-nephews, Mitchell and Brandon, two brothers-in-law, Harry Barnhill and Ed Ward, and her loving niece, Gay.
Christine answered to many names.
She was Chris to her beloved sisters, Hilda Barnhill and Linda Ward, who loved and looked up to their older sister all their lives. There are few people in the world who have had the honor to be as close to someone as these three sisters were. The first piece of their puzzle is now missing but they rejoice in knowing they will be reunited with her one day.
She was Aunt Tine to her nieces and nephews. Never having any children of her own, she loved and cared for them like they were her own. And in turn they loved her like a second mother.
She was Sis. Odom to her church family at North Rocky Mount Church of God where she was a charter member, Sunday School teacher, and choir member. She loved her church and church family. She served the Lord for over 80 years, and we know the church members who went before her welcomed her and they are now all rejoicing.
She was Christine to the many friends she made at Covenant Homes where she lived for many years. And to her co-workers at Rocky Mount Mills who she worked with for over 50 years (where she was a pin-up girl during WWII). And to the other friends in her life, of which there were many. She was a great friend to have!
She was Miss Mary to the awesome staff of Autumn Care of Nash who cared for her through her struggle with Alzheimer’s over the past three years (especially Natalie, Kendall, Amber, and Melinda) and the staff of Gentiva Hospice who lovingly helped ease her suffering over the past three months. Their love and support (and the stories they have shared with us of our sweet Christine) have meant so much to the family.
In addition to her sisters, Christine is survived by her nephews, Robbie Barnhill (Harriette), Jamie Overton (Kim), and her nieces, Ginger Guy (Mike) and Lori Overton. She also leaves great-nieces and great-nephews, Samantha Guy, Jimmy Guy, Ricky McKita, Derek Barnhill, Amanda White (Matt), and Bobby Malcolm, special friends James and Edna Starling, and too many other friends to list.
