Martha ''Marty'' Purvis Kincheloe

ROCKY MOUNT – Martha “Marty” Frances Purvis Kincheloe, 86, passed away on November 19, 2023. An only child, Marty was born and raised in Rocky Mount, NC, graduated from Rocky Mount Senior High School and Sullins College. She was married for 63 years to William “Bill” Hatcher Kincheloe, and together they had 3 daughters, 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
In 1961, Marty and Bill moved back to Rocky Mount, where she worked with Bill for many years at Wildwood Lamps.
Marty was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church, where she gave of her time and talents on various committees. She was a Past President and Sustaining Member of the Junior Guild of Rocky Mount, and a member of the Win-Thorne Garden Club. Marty was a great supporter of the Sub Deb Club during the time her daughters were active members. She especially enjoyed supporting her friends during their times of illness or bereavement. Marty would generously visit them, offering her comforting presence along with her delicious homemade soups and casseroles.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Hatcher Kincheloe and her parents, Stephen Randolph Purvis and Mayme Cuthrell Purvis. She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Hedgepeth and Martha Barnes (Russ), both of Rocky Mount, NC and Susan Turner (Russell) of Thomasville, GA; her grandchildren, Whit Barnes (Litsa), Robert Barnes (Lindsey), Catherine Hedgepeth Jones (Kevin), Will Hedgepeth, Garland Turner, Anne Scott Turner and Hill Turner; and her great-grandchild, Gray Jones.
A heartfelt thanks to Lisa Bobbitt, Angie Sutton, Fannie Powell and the staffs of Spring Arbor of Rocky Mount and Autumn Care of Nashville for their kind and compassionate care.
A memorial service to celebrate Marty’s life will be held on Sunday, November 26, 2023, at 3:00 PM at Lakeside Baptist Church, 1501 Sunset Avenue, Rocky Mount, NC 27804 with Dr. Jody Wright and Rev. Elizabeth Edwards officiating. A reception will immediately follow the service in the Kincheloe Building.
A private family burial will be held at Rocky Mount Memorial Park.
