Louise Gay Peacock

October 30, 1929 ~ June 7, 2018
TARBORO – Louise Peacock, 88, passed into the arms of her Savior on June 7, 2018. Born on October 29, 1929 to Louis Norman Gay and Edna Bradley Gay, she was raised on a farm in Edgecombe County. She graduated from Whitakers High School, where she excelled at basketball and other activities.
Louise married Philip E. Bass, Jr. in 1950. He was killed in an aircraft crash while in military service in Korea in 1953. She later married C. Bruce Peacock, Jr., and their union endured until his death in 2010.
In addition to her husbands and parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Gladys Gay Morris, a nephew, Aaron Green Gay, Jr., and, a niece, Edna Virginia Gay. She is survived by two brothers; Louis Norman Gay, Jr. and Aaron Green Gay (Emily); two nieces, Lynda Stallings Shepherd (Dan) and June Gay Carlisle (Bobby); and, a nephew, Louis Norman Gay III (Tracy). She is also survived by five great nephews and three great nieces. Louise loved her family and relished the annual family Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve gatherings. She was a loving and generous sister, aunt and great-aunt.
She loved gardening and kept a pristine yard highlighted by displays of colorful flowers. She also enjoyed needlecraft and her embroidery was beautiful art work.
Louise was a true patriot. She loved her country and was a lifelong dedicated supporter of the military. The flag always flew at her house in honor of the service of her husbands and brothers.
Lou was employed by People’s Bank for more than forty years. Faithful and diligent, she served the bank and its customers well throughout those years. Additionally, she made life-long friends of her co-workers and their monthly post-retirement lunches were a highlight of her social calendar.
Most importantly, her life was a living testament to her faith in the Lord. She was an active member of Gesthemane Baptist Church in Whitakers during her early years and, later, South Whitakers Baptist Church. Louise was known for her beautiful soprano singing voice which she used to serve the Lord. With her second husband, she helped found a church in Rocky Mount where, as the pastor’s wife, she served faithfully for some four decades. Lou’s favorite book was the Bible and she began and ended her day by reading from it. She lived a Godly life and walked with Lord every day. Her faith sustained her through difficult times, particularly during her last years, and her example is an encouragement to all who knew her.
She will be sorely missed by her friends and family.
