ROCKY MOUNT – It is with great love that the family of Judith Dunn McDaniel announces her passing on July 31, 2025, at the age of 77. Judy is survived by her husband Billy Gene McDaniel. Judy is also survived by her sister Jean Hogan and her nieces Lauren and Grace Hogan, and nephew Phillip Dunn, son of her deceased brother Phil Dunn. There are many loved cousins who were very special to her.
Judy taught school for 12 years and then she and Bill answered the call to move to Rocky Mount to care for her mother, Helen Baines Dunn when her husband James Dunn passed.
Judy and Bill enjoyed being around many of Judy’s family while living in Rocky Mount. They also enjoyed the wonderful people from Sunset Avenue Baptist Church who kept them up on the news. The church was faithful during the school year to cook for the church family and always had a plate for Judy and Bill brought by a smiling face. They looked forward to that!
As a child, Judy was like a mother to her younger brother Phil and sister Jean. When we lived in town, she took us to the Saturday movies, the library and to swim at the city pool. Mama would pick us up and take us home when she got off work.
We bid farewell to Judy who was a true friend and beacon of light. She leaves behind a legacy of warmth and kindness. She walked through life with a gentle strength, touching the lives of all she encountered with a genuine smile. She will be missed greatly by Bill, her husband, as they were very much in love.
A Graveside Service to celebrate Judy’s life will be held on August 11, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Rocky Mount Memorial Park with Rev. Robin Fisher officiating. Visitation with the family will follow the service at the graveside.
Flowers are welcome.
