Resided in: ROCKY MOUNT, NC

December 29, 2020 at 10:12 PM, Joseph Samuel “Sammy” Evans, at the age of 83, peacefully left this earth and entered Heaven. Sammy was born in Wilson County, NC on December 19, 1937. He was the son of the late Thurman Cary Evans and Bertha May Carter Evans.

Sammy, a man of faith, was a member of Southside Baptist Church along with his wife Pat. A proud American, he was a Veteran of the United States Army. Sammy began working for Carolina Trailways in 1960 as a bus driver. In 1971, Sammy bought his first backhoe. That’s when he realized he was an entrepreneur at heart. Sammy was a successful businessman who was known for his hustle. Sammy was an inspiration to so many. Some of the many businesses that he would be remembered for would be Sammy’s Backhoe and Paving Service, Sammy’s Take Out, The Playhouse Daycare, and Sammy’s Used Cars (1996 – current). Before heading to Sammy’s Used Cars, you would often find Sammy enjoying a laugh or two with his friends at Hardee’s or McDonald’s. Sammy was a talker, a great storyteller, and loved telling jokes. Sammy was a friend to many. To know him was to love him. He had a smile that would light up any room. Anyone that knew Sammy, knew that his greatest love was his family. He loved his family with all his heart and always put them first. Their lives will never be quite the same without Sammy in it, but they are so very thankful for the time God gave them with him and the memories that they will forever cherish. They loved Sammy with all their hearts and know they will be reunited with him again one day. A devoted husband, loving daddy and papa, dear brother, uncle and close friend to many, Sammy will be missed more than he will ever know.

Sammy is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patricia Joyner “Pat” Evans of Rocky Mount; his daughters, Tammy Patrice Evans Butler of Raleigh and Candace Jo Evans Watson and husband James, of Rocky Mount; his four grandsons, Patrick and Christian Butler and Chayse and Reagan Watson; his brother Garland Evans and wife Dean; his sister Joyce Turner and husband Wayne; his nephew Steve Evans and wife Pam; and his nieces Paige Walston and husband Tim, and Sheryl Naylor and husband Eddie.

A Graveside Service will be held on Sunday, January 10, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Rocky Mount Memorial Park with Pastor Billy Webb officiating. A visitation with the family will follow the service at the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Sammy’s memory to Southside Baptist Church Building Fund, 4948 Carter Road, Elm City, NC 27822.
