Hermer Lee “Bill” Stancil, age 84, passed away on Friday, March 8, 2019. Born in Nash County, NC on September 26, 1934, he was the son of the late Eddie Nathaniel Stancil and Naomi Bobbitt Stancil. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Margie Stancil Strickland; and brothers, Durrell and Roger Stancil.

A man of great faith, Bill was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. He dedicated most of his life to sharing and teaching the Gospel as a Sunday School teacher, a ministry he was first called towards first with Sunset Avenue Baptist Church of which he was a former member and served as a Deacon, and a devoted member and teacher for St. Paul UMC, a ministry which spanned over 50 years. A true servant to all, he was also a veteran of the U. S. Air Force during the Cold War. Bill began his career with the Rocky Mount Telegram as a full-time reporter for 13 years until taking on a position with Nash General Hospital. He contributed a newspaper column for the Telegram for many years as long as he was able to write. He retired from Nash General as a Public Relations Manager, but returned during his retirement to Nash General to continue to work part time, mostly greeting people and working at the front desk. In all, Bill made many friends through his 29 years working at the hospital and built many lasting relationships. An avid outdoorsman he had a love of hunting, a sport which he not only enjoyed doing, but also teaching as a Hunter Safety Instructor for over 20 years with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. He also loved playing a few rounds of golf with close friends and also was a talented painter. A dedicated husband, loving father and grandfather, and a close friend to many, Bill will be forever missed and never forgotten.

Bill leaves behind to cherish his memory, wife of 62 years, Elizabeth Stephens Stancil of Rocky Mount; his daughter, Jenny Joyner Cash and her husband, Wesley, of Rocky Mount; and son Fred Stancil and his wife, Diane, of Apex, NC. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Ashley and Nicole Stancil and Kaleb Joyner. He will also be missed by many loving nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services with Rev. Laura Wittman officiating. Burial will follow the service at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. Visitation with the family will be from 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM prior to the service in the Atrium of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made in Hermer’s name to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 1217 Bethlehem Road, Rocky Mount, NC 27803.
