Collis Wells Gardner

Collis Wells Gardner, age 88, passed away on Saturday, August 14, 2021. Born in Wilson County, NC on December 25, 1932, he was the son of the late Johnny Thomas Gardner and Effie Mae Proctor Gardner. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Gray Hathoway Gardner; his brothers, John Thomas “John Jr.” Gardner, Jr. and James Thad “J. T.” Gardner; and his sister, Marie Gardner Robbins.
A 1951 graduate of West Edgecombe High School, Collis was a Korean War Army veteran having served overseas in Oji, Japan. Baptized on November 14, 1964 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Rocky Mount, he loved and served his Lord faithfully. Collis retired with the United States Postal Service with 20 years of dedicated service in Tarboro. A very talented musician, his passion for music began on his 7th birthday when his brother, John Jr., bought him his first musical instrument, the mandolin. Collis would later go on to learn to play the guitar and fiddle. Beyond his love for music, he also enjoyed fishing and playing horseshoes, however no other pastime would bring him more joy than playing music with his friends. A loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, and dear friend to many, Collis will be dearly missed and never forgotten.
Collis is survived by his daughters, Robin Wells (James), Linda Clay (Jerry), Genny Acrey; and Gina Causway (Mitchell); his granddaughter, Carrie Milano (Perry); his great-grandchildren, Elise and Gracie Milano; his brother, William Gardner (Judy); and longtime friend, Kathy Butler.
A Graveside Service to celebrate Collis’ life will be held on Saturday, August 21, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. A visitation with the family will follow the service at the graveside.
