Dolly Rae Joyner Joyner, 84, after several months of declining health, passed away on Saturday morning, May 9, 2026. Dolly was born on August 7, 1941 in Nash County. She was the daughter of the late Silas “Red” Joyner and Sarah Evelyn “Ebbie” Baker Joyner.
Dolly was preceded in death by her three brothers Burlyn (Jiggs) Baker Joyner, Dixie Lee Joyner, Albert Lynn Joyner and her son-in-law David Keith Chartier; sisters-in-law Beverly M. Joyner, Janice “Sunshine” Joyner, Bonita J. Boone, Betsy J. Daughtridge and Jeanette Stark.
Dolly leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of 58 years Jackson Joyner, her daughter Jacqueline Rae “Jackie” Joyner Chartier; the apple of her eye granddaughter Sarah Lillian Chartier; her sister Evelyn Joyner; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Pat C. Joyner, Frances B. Joyner, Myrtle (Pete) Flowers, Arnold (Dolly L.) Joyner, Carson Joyner, Tony (Gail) Joyner, Danny Boone; several nieces, nephews and many grand nieces and grand nephews.
Dolly was a member of Sandy Cross Methodist Church and grew up in the Sandy Cross/Coopers School community. She was the oldest of five children, staying home to help care for her younger siblings while her parents worked on the farm. After graduating from Coopers School in 1959, she worked for the telephone company for thirty-eight years. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Dolly was faithful to her church, teaching the kindergarten class at Sandy Cross for many years. She also served as president of the Sandy Cross Methodist Women’s Society. She was responsible for the planning and preparation of the annual Homecoming Services at Sandy Cross as late as 2025.
A visitation will be held from 12:00pm-1:00pm on Wednesday May 13, 2026 at Cornerstone Funeral Home. The service will follow at 1:00pm in the chapel. The burial will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. The family will meet at other times at the home of her sister Evelyn Joyner.
