Wayne Smith Obituary

Elm City

With his devoted wife by his side, Andy ‘Wayne’ Smith, age 75, passed away peacefully at his home Friday evening, December 26, 2025.

Born in Wilson County on January 18, 1950, Wayne was one of six children born to Jack and Daisy P. Smith. A man of unwavering faith and a true servant of God, Wayne lived a life characterized by quiet strength and a joyful heart. He honorably served his country in the United States Army and later dedicated over 22 years to the Sharpsburg Fire Department.

Wayne was a pillar of strength to everyone who knew him—a steady hand in a storm and a man whose radiant smile was a reflection of the grace he carried. He found great inspiration in the biblical story of Joseph, often reflecting on its themes of perseverance and the deep importance of family. Like Joseph, Wayne was a protector and a provider who trusted in God’s plan, serving as a father figure to many and leaving an indelible legacy of faith and love.

Wayne was preceded in death by his first wife, Deborah ‘Debbie’ Cheryl Taylor Smith, and his brothers, Jack Smith Jr. and Danny Smith.

He leaves a lifetime of cherished memories for his wife of 28 years, Linda Glover Smith; his children, who were his greatest pride: Brian Wayne Smith (Amy) of Sims, NC, Christopher Shawn Smith of Louisville, KY, Christie Nicole Smith of Wendell, NC. He is also survived by his brother, Larry Smith of Rocky Mount, NC; and his sisters, Wanda Farrar (Jerry) of Whitakers, NC, and Melody Pridgen (Jerry) of Elm City, NC.

He will also be missed by Linda’s children, Amy Lynn Braziel of Charlotte and Tina Nicole Braziel of Raleigh; and his legacy continues through his eight grandchildren; Kasey Eason (Tanner), Andrew Smith, Grantt Smith, Paris Smith, Julia Robinson (Eden), Taylor Alicea, Olivia Lorenzen, and Maverly Smith. As well as his three step-grandchildren; Brianna Tew, Michaela Riley (Austin), Austin Heath; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who were all family in his eyes.

Funeral: Tuesday, December 30, 2025, following visitation at Tabernacle Baptist Church.

The Fireman’s Prayer

When I am called to duty, God, whenever flames may rage,

Give me the strength to save some life, whatever be its age.

Help me embrace a little child before it is too late,

Or save an older person from the horror of that fate.

Enable me to be alert and hear the weakest shout,

And quickly and efficiently to put the fire out.

I want to fill my calling and to give the best in me,

To guard my every neighbor and protect his property.

And if, according to my fate, I am to lose my life,

Please bless with Your protecting hand my children and my wife.
