Jane Gay White

Jane Gay White, age 94, passed away on Sunday, July 19, 2020. Born in Nash County, NC on July 13, 1926, she was the only child of the late James G. Gay and Nell Conner Gay. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William H. White, Jr. and many of her beloved friends.

Jane graduated from Rocky Mount High School and Women’s College in Greensboro. She began her 30 year teaching career in Roanoke Rapids only to return home for a long career at Rocky Mount Senior High School. Jane was an advisor with the school yearbook which took her and her students to New York City many times. Former students would see her around town and speak to her about their experiences with her at school. Jane was always delighted by their kindness. After retirement, she volunteered at Nash General Hospital for 16 years. Jane was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church serving on several committees. She loved her William Whitehead Sunday School Class often serving as their teacher. Jane was an active member of many clubs and organizations, such as Delta Kappa Gamma, DAR, Bridge Club, Garden Club, Book Club, and N.C.A.E. She loved to travel and go to the beach with family and friends.

Jane leaves behind a loving family of two daughters, two sons-in-law, four grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Daughters are Gay Whitney and husband, David, of New Bern, and Susan Carroll and husband, Allen, of Autryville; grandchildren are Melissa Cline and husband, David, of State Road, Kelly Bunn and husband, Michael, of Clayton, Stephanie Taylor and husband, Eric, of Fuquay-Varina, Kevin Carroll and wife, Kimberly, of Stedman; great-grandchildren, Miles, Sebastian, Liam, Ava, Austin, Jace, Joy, Nathan, and James.

A Private Family Service to celebrate Jane’s life will be held at Rocky Mount Memorial Park Chapel of Memories Mausoleum. Entombment will follow the service.
