Chester Kurt Stone

Chester Kurt Stone passed away on Thursday, January 20, 2022. He was a member (soldier) of The Salvation Army. The Salvation Army refers to the death of a soldier as being Promoted to Glory. Kurt was a faithful soldier until the time of his death. He served his church in many capacities over the years. He was a youth group leader, a bandsman, a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Men’s Club, and later was the Corp Sergeant Major for the local congregation. Kurt was also faithful to serving in the disaster work of the Salvation Army. He maintained the local corps’ Emergency Canteen. He served people all over the South during Hurricanes and tornados. He was a committed Christian and sought to serve and glorify his Lord and Savior every day.
He was born September 29, 1937 in Middlesex, NC to Chester and Christine Stone. He graduated
From Bailey High School in 1955. Kurt had a passion for cars. He loved to fix them up and drive them hard.
In 1960, Kurt went skating at the Sky Vue Skating Rink, and there he met the love of his life, Joyce Lancaster. The couple married in July of 1961. Kurt was drafted into the US Army and served overseas. He enjoyed his time of service, but was happy to return home to begin his married life with Joyce. During their marriage, Kurt was employed by Schottland’s Mill, Sears and Roebuck, and The Salvation Army Thrift Store. After retirement, he returned to his love of cars and spent his time restoring his Ford Model A. He enjoyed every aspect of having the Model A. Once it was fully restored, he rode with a group of friends enjoying the fruits of his labor. He loved to drive it around town and even to festivals in other towns. He smiled when he spoke about people waving at him in his Model A.
Kurt was preceded in death by his father, his mother, his oldest brother, Ronald Stone and his younger brother Jerry Stone.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joyce Lancaster Stone of the home. His two sisters, Ruth Brewer and Joyce Matthews of Middlesex. He is also survived by his brother-in-laws Henry Lancaster (Kay), and Joseph Lancaster (Carol). He is survived by his sister-in-laws Kaye Pope, Rhonda Whitley, and Deena Lancaster. He is survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
A service will be held on Monday, January 24, 2022. Visitation will be held from 5:30 -6:45 pm with the funeral service to follow at 7:00 pm. The service will be held at The Salvation Army of Nash, Edgecombe and Wilson located on 1000 Hunter Hill Road, Rocky Mount, NC. Lt Wayne Meads and Major Al Smith will be conducting the service. There will be no burial service for the public.
