Vivian D Pittman

Vivian D. (Polly) Pittman passed away at Brookdale Senior Living Solutions on December 17, 2023, at the age of 99. Born in Nash County on July 30, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Frank M. and Mary F. Dozier. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard (R.T.) Pittman, Jr; her sister, Lurene (also at age 99); and her brother, Bill.

Polly lived her entire life on farms in Nash county. She graduated from Red Oak High School at the age of 16. She married R. T. Pittman in January 1946, and they were together until his death in 2011. Polly was dedicated to her church, Salem Community Baptist. She taught Sunday School to young and old for over 50 years and played piano for almost as long. She wrote the community news for The Nashville Graphic. She loved to travel – enjoyed the planning almost as much as the travels themselves – and found many opportunities either going to visit her children or traveling with them throughout the United States. She was a crossword fanatic and loved to read. She also loved to crochet and made many baby blankets as gifts to new parents in the community. A very selfless and caring person, she cared for R.T.’s aunt in her final years. Quiet and unassuming, she always looked for the best in people, and was well liked by all who knew her. Residents and staff alike at Brookdale were amazed at the number of visitors “Miss Vivian” had throughout her stay. She will be missed by many.

Polly is survived by her children, Steve Pittman and wife, Gayle, of Afton, VA and Jean Pittman of Raleigh; her brother, Daxie Dozier, of Rocky Mount; her sister, Betty Jo Powers of Clayton; her grandchildren, Alan Thomas and wife, Theresa, of Leander, TX, and Kevin Thomas and wife, Ariana, of Ft Worth, TX; her niece, Kathy Price and husband, Michael, of Sims; and her nephew, Greg Powers and wife, Anne, of Clayton.

A Funeral Service to celebrate Polly’s life will be held on Friday, December 22, 2023, at 2:00 PM at Salem Community Baptist Church, 4502 Swift Creek School Road, Whitakers, NC 27891, with Pastor Caleb Gibson officiating. Burial will follow the service at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. Visitation with the family will be from 1:00 PM to 1:45 PM prior to the service at the church.
