Robert “Wayne” Patterson, Sr., age 67, grabbed the final checkered flag and completed his victory lap in heaven Monday, March 13, 2017, having driven his life the same way he raced—his way, full speed and with nothing held back. The race is done and the Goldwing is parked in the garage. Wayne worked for CSX in facilities maintenance until his retirement in 2010, 40 plus years of service. He traveled many miles from Virginia to South Carolina for CSX and made many friends along the way. Wayne was a member of the Improved Order of the Red Men where he worked to raise money for many charities, especially their National Charity, Alzheimer Research and to foster the precepts ‘Freedom, Friendship and Charity’ in the support of the United States of America. Wayne had also been a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose until his recent decline in health and attended functions in support of Moose Charities.
Wayne was born May 21, 1949 in Edgecombe County to the late Robert ‘Pat’ and Bertie ‘Berta’ Hawkins Patterson. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother J.R. Patterson, half-bother Eugene ‘Bo’ Patterson (Annette), half-bother Carlyle Patterson, and half-sister Louise Creekmore.
He leaves to cherish his memory son, Wayne Patterson, Jr.; grandchildren Justin, David, Darlene, Patricia Patterson and Lindsey Moore; great grandchildren, Loki and Raiden Devore. Also, half-brother, Marvin Patterson (Margaret), half-sister, Betty Pugh, and half-brother, Mick Patterson (Peggy) and nieces Renee Griffin (Randy) and Tammie Jordan (John).
Members of Wayne’s home left to cherish his memory are Kim Glover, her daughter Effie, and children, Hayley, Tim and Cora Glover. Also, daughter Amanda Meeks and husband George Meeks of Swansboro, NC and children Savannah, George, Bethany and Emilee Meeks, and Wayne’s daytime angel, Tonya Rhodes.
Pallbearers will be Tony Morris, Greg Bissette, Ronald Winstead, Glenn Bottoms, Jerry Hearn, Bill Glover and honorary, ‘Peanut’ Rhodes.
Family and friends will hold a casual visitation Saturday morning at 10:00 am with funeral service to follow at 11:00 in the Chapel of Cornerstone Funeral Home with Dr. Harry Fowler officiating. Attire is casual at Wayne’s request. A brief graveside service will follow the funeral and will be held at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. Flowers accepted or donations to I.O.R.M. Alzheimer Research Fund mailed c/o Bill Poythress, 1037 Compass Creek Drive, Rocky Mount, NC 27804. A ‘Celebration of Wayne’s Life’ will be held the evening of March 18 at the Rocky Mount Moose Lodge fundraiser event for Alzheimer’s Research, Moose Charities and Relay for Life of Nash County.
