Bessie Mae Oakley

January 7, 1925 ~ July 22, 2017
The battle is over and the victory has been won. Well done, thou good and faithful servant.
On July 22, 2017, Bessie Boone Oakley, our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend quietly slipped away and into the waiting arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Welcoming her home were her parents Connor and Florence Boone, her husband Dewey C. Oakley, her sister Nina Boone Jones and many lifelong friends that have gone before her.
Bessie was born on January 7, 1925 in Durham, NC. She moved to Rocky Mount, NC in 1956 where she and her husband raised their five children. Her life was devoted to her family as a homemaker. She enjoyed being active. She loved socializing with friends, gardening and was an excellent cook. She made the best homemade biscuits and desserts that you could imagine. She was a member of Edgemont Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. She loved the Lord and shared his plan of salvation to those she encountered.
Her loving family that survives include sons: Ken Oakley and wife Debra, Tim Oakley and wife Cindy, and Steve Oakley and wife Patricia; Daughters: Nancy Rackley and Denise Hill.
She also leaves her eight grandchildren: Michelle Sullivan (Dennis), Josh Oakley, Amanda Toler (David), Stephanie Stone, Christie Strickland (Van), Megan Liv (Chris), Matthew Oakley (Kate), Braxton Hill (Liz), and Ashley Hill and 12 great grandchildren.
A special thank you to Tracy, Gwen, Danielle, and Debra of Rocky Mount Rehabilitation Center and Byron for your love and care.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Edgemont Baptist Church, 1622 West Mount Drive, Rocky Mount, NC 27803.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Rocky Mount Memorial Park.
