Curtis Day “GG” O’Briant, age 90, passed away on Wednesday, June 8, 2016. Born in Person County, NC on January 11, 1926, he was the son of the late Robert Edward and Ora Wilborn O’Briant. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Wilbur, Donald and Jerry O’Briant.
Curtis was a life time farmer, later sold real estate and was also an appraiser. He served as President of Halifax Mutual Insurance Company for 41 years. He also served as President of the NC Agricultural Association, the NC Corn Growers Committee and was a member of the NC Corn Growers Executive Board. He won numerous awards for Corn and Peanut production for many years. He served as a board member of Wachovia Bank and Benvenue Country Club. Curtis served in the Naval Air Force in World War II.
Curtis leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving wife Esther “Jackie” O’Briant of 61 years; his daughters, Jane O. Jones of Rocky Mount, NC and Carolyn O. Sapp of Whitakers, NC; his sister, Faye O. Horne of Pittsboro, NC; his brother, Lee O’Briant of Roanoke Rapids, NC; a granddaughter, Ashton Jones Fisher of Red Oak and his dearly beloved grandson, Richard Curtis Sapp and his wife, Claudia of Whitakers, NC.
The family would like to thank Curtis’s special caregivers; Julian Peace, Sandra Fuse, Ray Mitchell and Malinda Lynch for their compassion and kindness.
A Graveside Service will be held at Rocky Mount Memorial Park on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at 11:00 AM with Dr. Wendy Edwards officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives Friday, June 10, 2016 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
