BATTLEBORO – Betty Nichols Ray, age 81, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, September 5, 2023. Born in Wilson County, NC on February 14, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Johnnie Gray Nichols and Virginia Tanner Nichols. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Edward Thomas “Tommy” Ray.

Betty was an esteemed member of North Rocky Mount Church of God, was truly a remarkable individual. Her unwavering love for the Lord was evident in every aspect of her life. Betty possessed a tender and giving heart, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. Her compassion knew no bounds, and she inspired those around her with her unwavering faith. One of Betty’s most admirable qualities was her strength. As a mother raising four boys, she faced numerous challenges, yet she never wavered in her commitment to keep their paths straight. Betty’s dedication to instilling values and leading by example was truly commendable. She served as a guiding light for her children, showing them the importance of kindness, integrity, and faith. Betty’s legacy will forever be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing her. Her unwavering faith, compassionate nature, and strength of character continue to inspire others to this day. She was truly a remarkable woman, whose impact on her family, community, and church will never be forgotten.

Betty is survived by her sons, Dennis Ray of Nashville, Thomas Ray and wife, Sandra, of Tarboro, Randy Ray and wife, Ann, of Hinesville, GA, and Kenneth Ray and wife, Pauline, of Check, VA; her eight grandchildren; her nine great-grandchildren; and her four great great-grandchildren; her sister, Peggy Sue Batchelor and husband, Alton, of Red Oak; her brother, George Nichols and wife, Mary, of Rocky Mount; many numerous nieces and nephews and a special friend, Julie Marshall.

A Funeral Service to celebrate Betty’s life will be held on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at 3:00 PM in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services with Pastor Jerome Mozingo officiating. Burial will follow the service at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. Visitation with the family will be from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM prior to the service in the Atrium of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home.
