SIMON MOSS, JR.

ROCKY MOUNT – Simon Moss, Jr., age 91, passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2024. Born in Nash County, NC on April 27, 1933, He was the son of the late Simon Moss, Sr. and Alice Driver Moss. Simon is preceded in death by his wife of 69 years whom he adored and cared for, Velma Winstead Moss. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Brenda Jo Moss Cockrell; his brothers, Milton Moss, Cuther Moss, Carl Linwood Moss; his sisters, Lucille Viverette, Idaline Joyner, Betty Rae Pittman and Georgia Mae Bass; his son-in-law, Joseph William Cockrell.

Simon retired as a Sergeant from the Nash County Sheriff’s Office, serving under the esteemed leadership of Sheriff Frank Brown. Throughout his years of dedicated service, Simon took immense pride in protecting and serving his community. Simon and his beloved wife Velma were cherished members of Corinth Baptist Church in Nashville. Their unwavering love for their church and its congregation brought them great joy and a strong sense of belonging. Simon’s home was renowned throughout town for its vibrant and enchanting Christmas decorations. The dazzling lights and festive displays were so mesmerizing that they occasionally outshone the streetlights, leaving neighbors in awe. Simon’s passion for Christmas extended to the interior of his home as well, where he created a magical atmosphere that spread warmth and cheer to all who entered. In addition to his creative talents, Simon possessed a delightful sense of humor. His witty jokes had the power to bring smiles to the faces of all who heard them. And even if a joke fell flat, Simon’s infectious laughter would never fail to lift spirits and elicit laughter from those around him. As Simon and Velma journeyed through life together, their love only grew stronger. When Velma required full-time care, Simon lovingly and selflessly took on the role of her caretaker. His devotion to her knew no bounds, and he remained by her side until the very end. Simon was not only a devoted husband, but also a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a dear friend to many. His presence brought comfort, joy, and a sense of humor that will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Simon’s memory will forever live on, etched in the hearts of those whose lives he touched.

Simon is survived by his son, Michael “Mike” Erskine Moss (Jamie) of Nashville; his grandchildren, Jeffrey Cockrell (Bobbie Jo Hargrove), Jennifer Cockrell (Ray), Brittany Moss Glover, and Chandler Moss (Leslie); his great-grandchildren, Jessica Flood, Joey Smith, Jonah Glover, Nolan Glover, Bennett Glover, Ava Grace Moss, and Owen Moss.

A Funeral Service to celebrate Simon’s life will be held on Monday, May 6, 2024, at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services with Rev. Toby Easley officiating. Burial will follow the service at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. The family will receive friends and relatives on Sunday, May 5, 2024, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Simon’s memory to Corinth Baptist Church, 2883 N. NC 58 Hwy., Nashville, NC 27856.
