Ray Stanley Lewis, 87, died peacefully at his home on Friday, February 2nd. Ray was born on November 4th, 1930 at his family home in Elm City to James Reddin Lewis and Madie Cobb Lewis. He was preceded in death by his parents; his two brothers, James Reddin Lewis, Jr. and Jasper Cobb Lewis; his daughter, Martha Lewis Martin; and his great-granddaughter, Adelyn Jane McGee.
Ray served proudly in the United States Navy for four years. After being honorably discharged, he worked for many years as a tobacconist with China American Tobacco Company, Lorillard, Eastern Processors, and Intabex. He enjoyed traveling around the world throughout his career and was held in high esteem by all of his colleagues.

Ray was a member of West Edgecombe Baptist Church and a former board member at the West Edgecombe Volunteer Fire Department. Ray loved his family, the New York Yankees, the St. Louis Cardinals, the North Carolina State Wolfpack, Wrightsville Beach, and chocolate covered peanuts.
Ray is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty Lanier Lewis; his daughters, Kathy Boswell and Lori Day; his sons, Pender Lewis and Tim Lewis; his sons-in-law, Donald Boswell and Ron Day; his daughters-in-law, Becky Lewis and Lisa Lewis; his grandchildren, Kristen Coggin, Lauren McGee, Kathryn Boswell, Stan Lewis, Drew, Meagan, and Tyler Martin, Bailey and Amelia Lewis, and Elaine and Alex Day; his grandchildren by marriage, Myers Coggin, Trent McGee, Mikaela Lewis, and Mary Margaret Martin; and his great-grandchildren, Merritt, Sullivan, and Elliott Coggin and Emery McGee.
The family will be forever grateful to Melvin Harrell for his friendship and the exceptional care he provided for Ray in the final years of his life.
Services will be held at West Edgecombe Baptist Church on Sunday, February 4th with visitation from 12:45-1:45pm and the funeral at 2:00pm with Dr. Jeffrey Chappell officiating. A private burial will be held for the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Children’s Miracle Network of Eastern North Carolina or to the March of Dimes – Team Adelyn’s Hope.
