Roger T Hopkins, Sr

ROCKY MOUNT – Roger Thomas Hopkins Sr., age 98, passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2023. Born in New Hanover County, NC on September 2, 1924, he was the son of the late Thomas Hopkins and Lottie Alma Sullivan Smith. He was also preceded in death by his first wife of 62 years, Dorothy King Hopkins; and his seven siblings.

Roger was a long-time member of Oakdale Baptist Church. He was a member of the West Edgecombe Ruritan Club for over 30 years and held every club office and worked on various community service projects. Roger retired from CSX Railroad after many years of dedicated service. He was an excellent cook and enjoyed fishing. Roger was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and will be missed by all who knew him.

Roger is survived by his wife of 12 years, Daphne Rhodes Hopkins; his children, Sylvia Hopkins Powell and husband, Tolar, of Gainesville, FL, R.T. “Tommy” Hopkins, Jr. wife, Teresa, of Rocky Mount, David Brian Hopkins and wife, Judy, of Greer, SC; his step-children, Betty Sue Rhodes Smith and husband, Timothy, of Hampstead, Vernon “Tad” Rhodes and wife, Dawn, of Rocky Mount, and James Franklin Rhodes and wife, Linda, of Greenville; his four grandsons; and his seven great-grandchildren.

A Funeral Service to celebrate Roger’s life will be held on Friday, February 24, 2023, at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services with Rev. Joe Price and Pastor Dion Loving officiating. Burial will follow the service at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. Visitation with the family will be from 1:00 PM to 1:45 PM prior to the service in the Atrium of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home.
