Jean Skinner Coley, 95, currently of Lynchburg, Virginia and formerly of Sharpsburg, North Carolina, died on July 18, 2017 after a brief illness.
Jean, the daughter of the late Harry and Hattie Skinner, was born April 4, 1922 in Nash County, North Carolina.
She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 65 years, James (Jamie) Coley, and her four sisters, Elsie Inscoe, Mary Johnson, Nannie Radford, and Mildred Dozier.

She is survived by a daughter, Gail Peterson and her husband, Mike, of Palatka, Florida, and two sons, Phill Coley and his wife, Linda, and Harry Coley, all of Lynchburg, Virginia.  She is also survived by four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Jean resided in Sharpsburg, North Carolina, after her retirement from the Asheville Mica Company in Newport News, Virginia.  During her time in Sharpsburg, she attended Memorial Baptist Church.  She later moved to Lynchburg, Virginia, to reside with her sons and daughter-in-law.

Jean enjoyed visiting with her family, reading novels, and working word puzzles.  She was an avid Duke basketball fan and watched all their games.  She also enjoyed answering the phone and relaying messages.  Jean could find you anywhere to deliver a message.  She loved to talk about growing up in the country, playing basketball, and working in the fields with her father and sisters.

Family will meet with friends 6 to 8 PM on Friday, July 21st at Rocky Mount Bible Church, 5630 Dortches Blvd, Rocky Mount. A graveside service will follow at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 22, 2017 at Rocky Mount Memorial Park, 4454 Dortches Blvd, Rocky Mount with the  Reverend Stan Brown officiating.
