DORTCHES – Nanette “Nan” Webb Brown, age 65, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, July 22, 2023. Born in Edgecombe County, NC on August 29, 1957, she was the daughter of the late Johnnie Marvin “Buster” Webb and Dorothy “Dot” Jean Phillips Webb.

Nanette Webb Brown, affectionately known as Nan, had a deep passion for reading, particularly historical books. In addition to her love for literature, Nan had an adventurous spirit and thoroughly enjoyed traveling to various destinations. When she wasn’t immersed in her books or off on a new adventure, Nan found joy in spending Saturday evenings at the pool or simply relaxing in the serene ambiance of the outhouse. These moments of tranquility allowed her to unwind and appreciate the beauty of nature surrounding her. Nana’s one and only grandson, Mason, held a special place in her heart. He was not just a source of immense joy and pride for Nana, but also her everything. Their bond was unbreakable, and she cherished every moment spent with him. Mason brought immeasurable love and happiness into Nana’s life, and she treasured their time together as some of the most precious moments she had ever experienced. Nan’s dedication to her faith was evident through her active involvement in the Dortches Baptist Church. She served the church community in various capacities, demonstrating her unwavering commitment. As the church librarian and her melodious voice singing in the church choir. Additionally, Nan’s culinary skills were second to none, and she generously shared her gift by preparing countless delicious meals for church gatherings. Beyond her contributions within the church, Nan was a pillar of support to her husband, who served as the Fire Chief for over four decades. Throughout their married life, Nan played a crucial role in supporting the fire department’s initiatives. From organizing Christmas tree sales every year to coordinating the annual slinging chicken fundraiser in March, Nan’s dedication and hard work were instrumental in the success of these events. Furthermore, she spearheaded the planning of ladies’ night every December, creating a special evening for the women in the community to come together and celebrate. Nan’s legacy will continue to inspire and uplift others for years to come.

Nan is survived by her husband of 48 years, Berry R. “Bob” Brown of Dortches; her son, Philip Brown and wife, Nickie, of Dortches; her daughter, Robin Brown of Wendell; her grandson, Mason Brown; her brothers, Johnnie Webb and Dudley Webb and wife, Bridget; her sister, Leigh Moore and husband, John; her special sister-in-law, Dorothy Brown; and many nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Service to celebrate Nan’s life will be held on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at 3:00 PM in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services with Rev. Chet Rains officiating. Burial will follow the service at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. Visitation with the family will be from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM prior to the service in the Atrium of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home.
