Spencer Lee Dew, age 72, was born in Tarboro NC July 15, 1946 to the late Virginia H. Dew and Lee Dew Jr. He was preceded in death by brothers Johnny A. Dew and Robbie L. Dew. He is survived by his devoted wife of over 52 years, Vickie Manning Dew. Children include Laura Dew Brickhouse (Adrian) of Pilot NC, Julie Dew Privott (Wade) of Edenton NC, and Adam Spencer Dew (Megan) of Spring Hope NC. Grandchildren include Gabby Brickhouse, Spencer Brickhouse, Wes Privott, Reagan Privott, Evan Dew, and Collin Dew. Surviving sisters include Sharon Outlaw (Wayne) of Rocky Mount, Brenda Measamer (Bill) of Raleigh, and Buffie Rodri (Christy) of Raleigh, a special aunt- Helen Hux of Tarboro, and many nieces and nephews as well as other family members.
He was a member of the Rocky Mount Motorcycle Club, The John Birch Society, and attended West Haven Presbyterian Church.
Spencer served in the Air Force where he was stationed in Glasgow, Montana. After returning to Nash County, he worked as a Mechanical Engineer for 23 years at Standard Products and finished his career at Nomaco in Tarboro and Zebulon.
Being an avid fan of history, he committed his life to learning. One of his most well-known statements was “the more I learn, the more I realize just how little I know”. When not working or with his family, he spent his time buried in a book so he could learn more and share it with others. He was a true patriot, who loved our great country with all his heart and wanted it to continue for his family.
Spencer always put the needs of others above his own regardless of his own personal cost. He was humble and giving. Those that knew him will agree. He had a moral compass that was beyond compromise no matter the situation. He would always do the right thing. He lived a life that is to be an honorable example not only to his family, but to everyone that knew him.
The Family would like to thank the Staff of the Danny Talbot Cancer Center for their care and love for him over the past year and Nash County Hospice.
A private graveside service will be held at on February 21st at Rocky Mount Memorial Park, followed by a visitation for family and friends at West Haven Presbyterian Church fellowship hall from 4 to 6 pm. Flowers are welcome (to the family home or to Cornerstone Funeral Home), or in lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to West Haven Presbyterian Church at 1001 West Haven Boulevard, Rocky Mount, NC 27803.
